Historical Background

The Fourah Bay College library is located in the (Michael Jollife Building). The building was named after the late Mr. Michael Jollife, an expatriate who served as librarian between 1961 and 1970.

In a tribute delivered at a Memorial Service and Requiem Mass held for the late Mr. Jollife at the Sacred Cathedral, Freetown, on Wednesday 22nd June 1977, Emeritus Professor Eldred Jones observed that "it was clear from the very first that in Mr. Jollife the college had found an extraordinary man (who) fulfilled needs as they arose... He was happy, stacking books in the library as in taking part in the highest counsels of the college. He made the lives of many better than he lived".
